Petition Calls On JCU To Reverse Changes Affecting Students
By Lily Constable
James Cook University students have launched several petitions in response to a series of proposed cost-cuttingĀ measures they say will affect their education and overall university experience.
The petitions follow changes affecting different areas of the university, including plans to move some engineering and physics lectures online, the proposed closure of the Veterinary Diagnostic Pathology Laboratory and the removal of SWOTVAC.
Although each petition focuses on a different issue, students say they share common concerns about the impact the proposed changes could have on learning and campus life.
One petition was created by engineering and physics students following plans to replace some in-person lectures with online delivery. Students argue face-to-face teaching allows greater interaction with lecturers and classmates and provides a better learning environment for complex subjects.
Another petition opposes the removal of SWOTVAC, the study period traditionally provided before examinations. Students say the week has long been an important opportunity to revise course material and prepare for final exams.
Veterinary students have also launched a petition opposing the proposed closure of the Veterinary Diagnostic Pathology Laboratory. They argue the laboratory plays a vital role in practical training, research and preparing graduates for careers in veterinary science.
Students behind the petition are calling on the university to reconsider the proposed changes and increase consultation before making any final decisions.
In a statement, James Cook University said no final decision had been made regarding the future of the Veterinary Diagnostic Pathology Laboratory but that it was proposing changes to ensure the service remained sustainable.
